Authorities in New York City estimate some one million people will pack into Times Square to watch the famous New Year’s Eve ball drop. In order to keep the public safe, the New York Police Department will have heavy weapons units and pickpocket teams patrolling on the ground as well as drones and helicopters in the skies. NBC’s Emilie Ikeda reports for TODAY on security preparations underway.

As the country prepares to ring in the new year, new state laws will take effect around the country on a host of issues, including the use of artificial intelligence in health care and elections, paid family and medical leave and rising medical insurance costs.

Bitter cold is threatening to put a damper on New Year’s Eve plans across the United States with snow showers expected through parts of the Great Lakes and heavy rain in Southern California. TODAY’s Dylan Dreyer tracks the forecast.
